Improving Southend’s air quality

In administration Labour increased investment in green technology. It is in all our interests to co-operate to improve the quality of our environment. Promoting the use of green technology such as electric cars, renewable energy sources, encouraging better home insulation and reducing the use of plastic bottles are all practical steps that we can take that will be good for the environment and the economy.

We will:

Seek and apply for funding to develop ‘pocket’ parks, greener high streets and planting in areas of high pollution. This could include the planting of an ‘urban wood’.

Invest in green technology, building on the feasibility work being done on using solar panels and other green technology in the council’s housing stock.

Develop infrastructure to meet the expected increase in use of electric vehicles and pilot a council backed car-pool scheme, as well as further investment in cycling.

Promoting responsible consumption

Promote and extend the use of water fountains and water bottle refill points in public areas.

Support the use of green technology and other environmentally-friendly measures, champion locally produced food and promote sustainability. We would promote the idea of a city farm.

Build on existing schemes to promote the reuse and recycling of furniture, clothing etc. to reduce waste and support people who are in need.

Build public toilets in appropriate locations, making these facilities accessible to all.
