Young people in Southend tell government to save EMA

Councillor Ian Gilbert, Leader of the Labour Group on Southend council joined young people outside South Essex College to protest about the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance, which is the subject of a House of Commons vote today.

Speaking outside the college, Councillor Ian Gilbert said:

"There are around 2,000 young people in Southend who received EMA, many of whom would not be able to continue their studies without it. There is a vote taking place in Westminster, but I want to make sure young people in Southend have their voices heard.

Yesterday we saw Southend Council viciously cut its youth service, and the government is planning to raise university tuition fees as high as £9,000 a year.

The Conservative/Lib Dem government has completely betrayed its pre-election promise to safeguard EMA, and young people are rightly angry."
