The Labour Party in Southend have welcomed the election of the new Leader and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. On Saturday morning (12th September) Jeremy Corbyn was elected leader ahead of Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall. Tom Watson was elected deputy leader over Stella Creasy, Caroline Flint, Angela Eagle and Ben Bradshaw.

Deputy Leader of the Labour Group on Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, Cllr Julian Ware-Lane, said:

"We have suffered two bad losses in successive General Elections, something that I have personal experience of as a candidate on both occasions. This new team presents us with exciting possibilities and I, for one, am looking forward to the challenges ahead and to exposing just how tough another five years of Conservatism will be for working people right across the UK. I hope that the new leadership team will pay us a visit in Southend soon."

He added, "The people we serve need a Labour Government on their side. This election is the first step towards returning a Labour Government in 2020."
