Southend Borough Council (ShoeburynessWard) By-election candidate selection meeting, 7.30pm on Friday 21st April
at the Labour Party office, 268, Sutton Road, Southend-on-Sea SS2 5ET

Members who live in Shoeburyness ward and have been full members of the party for six months continuously as at 3rd April 2017 and whose subscriptions are up to date on the day of the meeting are eligible to vote to choose the Labour Party candidate for this By-election. There is no facility for postal or proxy voting for local council election candidate selections, so members will need to attend in person in order to vote. There will be a membership check at the start of the meeting.

Because there are only two nominess it will be a straight 'First past the post' ballot.

Applications for the candidacy have been received from Maggie Kelly and Ian Pope and approved by the Local Campaign Forum Executive. Brief details of those nominees are shown below and those two people have been invited to attend the selection meeting, speak to members in support of their bid to become the candidate and take questions from members. Maggie Kelly
Maggie has been a continuous member of the Labour Party for four years, works for the NHS & lives with her family in Shoeburyness. Maggie has been an active campaigner for the party, is involved in community activities and has stood as the Labour candidate in Shoeburyness at the last three local elections, building Labour support in a seat that we need to gain from the opposition. She has is a member of the trade union Unison.
Ian Pope
Ian has been a continuous member of the Labour Party for seven years, is a retired Civil Servant and lives with his family in Southchurch. Ian has been an active campaigner for the party, is involved in community activities, is currently Secretary of the Eastern Branch of Rochford & Southend East Constituency Labour Party and has stood as the Labour candidate in four recent local elections (in Southchurch, Belfairs, Thorpe & West Leigh wards) to ensure the party had representation in areas where it was unlikely to win the seat. Ian is a member of Momentum and the Labour Representation Committee as well as the trade union Unite.
