Councillor Mike Royston has presented over 600 more signatures to the council in support of our campaign to keep a swimming pool in the centre of town. The Conservative-controlled council plans to close Warrior Square swimming pool, with a replacement out at Garon Park, which is not within walking distance of the town centre and very difficult to get to by public transport. The pool planned by the Conservatives would also be smaller than the current facility at Warrior Square.
Mike Royston says: "I received a huge number of signatures from students at the new campus building. Clearly they would like access to a swimming pool in the centre of town, as would many people who either live or work in the centre of Southend. It is simply not good enough to say that these people can travel out to Garon Park, we should be providing facilities which fit in with people's lives, and it's in everyone's interest to have a healthier population.
Please do get in touch with me if you want to add your name to the petition."
Mike and the Labour group of councillors have already forced a review of swimming will be organising more events in the new year to demonstrate the strength of public opinion on this issue. Mike has also had badges made to promote the campaign.
