Lloyds job losses body blow to Southend

The planned closure of the Essex House offices and consequent almost 700 compulsory job losses alone is a heavy body blow to the Southend area and its already fragile economy.

In a comment on the news that more than 800 jobs could go with the planned closure of Lloyds Banking Group operations in Southend, Essex Euro MP Richard Howitt said,

“The planned closure of the Essex House offices and consequent almost 700 compulsory job losses alone is a heavy body blow to the Southend area and its already fragile economy.

“If the compulsory redundancies do go ahead they will hit at the heart of the community, with long serving members of staff thrown out of work and whole families affected.

“The proposals offer very few employment alternatives and there are even fewer other job opportunities on offer locally.

“I want to see Lloyds Banking Group reverse this decision, to engage fully with the workforce and local community and to see the error of their business calculations.

“I fully support the campaign led by banking trade union staff to overturn this wilfully uncaring proposal.”
