A leading Southend councillor has attacked David Amess for his bizarre and unhelpful rant against the town’s competitors for the coveted “City of Culture” status.

A leading Southend councillor has attacked David Amess for his bizarre and unhelpful rant against the town’s competitors for the coveted “City of Culture” status.

The MP for Southend West made his outburst, the latest in a long line of embarrassing gaffes, on a radio show describing rival candidate towns as “dumps” and saying that he didn’t think “they would know what culture was”. Given Mr Amess reputation as a clownish figure, the comments are more likely to harm Southend’s bid.

Ian Gilbert, councillor for Victoria Ward and leader of the Labour Group on the Council said, "We expect MPs to speak up for their town, but Mr Amess's rant will damage Southend's chances not improve them. With Mr Amess's track record it's hard to see anyone being impressed by his intervention, and I very much fear he harms the reputation of our town every time he opens his mouth. "

Southend has a rich and broad cultural history being associated with actresses like Helen Mirren, Kara Tointon and Lara Pulver; writers such as John Fowles, Rebecca West and Martina Cole; musicians Kevin Bowyer, Wilko Johnson, Gary Brooker and bands like The Horrors; comedians Lee Evans, Russell Kane and Phill Jupitus; as well as historian Simon Schama and the star CBBC’s Horrible Histories, Matthew Baynton.
