Labour pressure secures promise of new Southend school

After years of campaigning from Labour, Southend Council has finally agreed to spend £4m on a new primary school for Southend.

Councillor Ian Gilbert, Leader of the Labour Group on Southend Council has welcomed the decision.

“We have been pressing for this for a number of years,” said Cllr Gilbert.

“Even without the increase in birth rate, it was obvious that the number of housing developments in the town centre area would put pressure on local schools.

“Had this process been started sooner we perhaps would not be facing some very difficult decisions about whether to expand existing schools on cramped sites.

“Government capital funding for schools has dried up, so previous inaction could end up costing Southend taxpayers.”
