The Labour Party in Southend has re-selected Cllr Ian Gilbert to contest Victoria ward at the council elections in May 2016.
Cllr Gilbert, who is the leader of the Labour Group on Southend Borough Council, has represented the town centre ward since 2008, and led Labour into administration as one of the Deputy Leaders of the council. He also stood as the Parliamentary candidate in this year's general election, seeing the Labour vote increase in difficult electoral circumstances for the party.
Cllr Gilbert said, "I am delighted to have been chosen by Victoria Labour members to fight another election. The last four years have seen a sea-change in Labour's position in Southend. After years of inaction under the Tories, pressure from the new administration is leading to action on the regeneration of Victoria Avenue and ambitious house-building plans come forward."
He added, "My colleagues David, Margaret and I work as a team to represent Victoria ward effectively, working alongside residents and community groups to deal with the challenges our area faces."
