Helen McDonald is the Labour Party's candidate for Kursaal in the 2016 Southend Borough Council Elections.
I am standing for Kursaal ward because I think I can make a real contribution to making positive changes in the ward. I have worked in education for 16 years and, as well as teaching children with special educational needs and disabilities, I am part way through a PhD in Education which focuses on children's experiences of education as a result of school closures.
I am passionate about young people being given opportunities to achieve and succeed. I do voluntary work with young survivors of sexual violence and young offenders as well as running Supporting Sisters in Southend, which is a project that works with homeless organisations and foodbanks to provide local women in need with sanitary products. I enjoy being an active member of my local community and I hope to be able to add to the excellent work that is already being done by Labour councillors in Kursaal ward.
