Cheryl Nevin - Labour Candidate for Milton Ward

I have lived in Southend for the last 30 years, and have raised my family here. I work in the NHS at BartsHealth, previously working in Southend and Broomfield Hospitals. During my 4 years as a Labour Councillor and Chair of People Scrutiny I’ve had an opportunity to achieve some significant things for local residents:

* On Health I successfully led scrutiny at County Hall over Specialist Urology Services, the PET scanner decisions, delivering them to Southend and campaigned against relocating specialist A&E Services to Basildon, producing evidence to persuade NHS England to change their mind. Southend residents needed to retain a fully functioning Emergency Department, following visits to East of England Ambulance HQ.

* On Adult Social Care and Advocacy I challenged theTory Administration when it let residents down, with whistleblowing cases, exposing the effect of service cuts on vulnerable people.

* On Education, as Vice Chair of Scrutiny working party on “Alternative Provision for schools”, made recommendations on helping young people stay within mainstream education when things go wrong, highlighting to Regional School Commissioner increasing numbers of exclusions by Academy run schools.

* Successfully Campaigned for better play equipment in Milton Gardens, for C2C to clear public footpath between Ditton Court and Valkyrie Road making it safer by replacing lighting with LED and cut back overhanging trees along railway sidings in St. Vincent’s Road. Working with residents to introduce a green grid strategy, planting trees across Milton and campaigned to retain Warrior square as a Green space. I challenged Houses of Multiple Occupation and overdevelopment planning applications and opposed the Esplanade and Seafront Museum developments.

If re-elected, I’ll make sure Labour values, of a fair and level playing field, including representing minority and disadvantaged groups, are priorities in all we do, to deliver better outcomes for Milton residents.
