Anne Jones selected as Labour Party candidate for St. Luke’s Ward

anne jonesSouthend Labour have today (19 August) announced that Anne Jones will be the party’s candidate for St Luke’s ward at the next council elections. Anne was selected by a vote of local members two weeks ago.

This means that it’s Anne vs. Anna in St Luke’s because Anne will be fighting Anna Waite, the controversial Conservative cabinet member and former Council Leader.

The contest for St Luke’s Ward could determine whether the Conservatives keep control of the council in May.

Anne is a mother of four, a school governor and a board member of the Turning Tides neighbourhood management project, and has been an active and hard-working campaigner on education issues.

On her candidacy Anne said "I was inspired by working with Mike and other Labour candidates in Southend, and think that I can contribute to the local community. I will continue Mike's work in campaigning for better bus services and better community facilities for local residents. I also think it’s disgraceful that the Conservatives who represent St Luke’s voted themselves extra allowances whilst local residents are losing out as a result of their government."

Former St Luke’s councillor Mike Royston is supporting Anne. He said, "I've known Anne for some time and have no doubt that she will make a tremendous councillor for St Luke’s ward."
