Anne Jones selected as Labour Party candidate for St. Luke’s Ward

Southend Labour have today (19 August) announced that Anne Jones will be the party’s candidate for St Luke’s ward at the next council elections. Anne was selected by a vote of local members two weeks ago. This means that it’s Anne vs. Anna in St Luke’s because Anne will be fighting Anna Waite, the controversial Conservative cabinet member and former Council Leader. The contest for St Luke’s Ward could determine whether the Conservatives keep control of the council in May. Councillor Gilbert concerned by Tory plans for Council housing

Labour Councillor Ian Gilbert (Victoria Ward) today (19 August) raised concerns over Conservative plans, both nationally and locally, regarding security of tenure for council house tenants. Councillor Gilbert raised four main issues. That before tenants are threatened with eviction the full circumstances of each case needs to be considered; That shuffling tenants from site to site prevents a community spirit from growing; That tenants who earn over a certain amount should not be automatically lose their council home; That Southend’s Conservatives should bear heavy responsibility for the limited council housing stock in Southend. Unite criticises Con-Lib government for Legal Aid cuts

Ken Clarke's plans to cut legal aid funding will have a devastating impact on some of the most exploited people in our society Unite said today (18 August). The Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition plan to make cuts to the £2bn legal aid budget year on year will mean that thousands of people will not be able to afford to protect themselves. Shelter warns about Housing Benefit cuts

The housing and homelessness charity Shelter has criticised the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government today (18 August) for its plans to cut the Local Housing Allowance next year. Councillor Ian Gilbert, who represents Victoria Ward, is concerned about the effect on Southends' families with CRISIS, another national homelessness charity, warning that 5,670 people in Southend will be affected. According to Shelter's figures, a family living in a two bedroom house in Southend will lose £49.49 every month under the Conservative-Lib Dem scheme, whilst those living in a one bedroom house will lose £19.78 per month.
